Overview

## Tree Surgery explained
Trees handled properly: assessed first, cut with a reason, and left safe. Ben started in tree surgery at 21 and still leads the climbing work, so the tree you keep is shaped for health and longevity, not simply reduced.

### What tree surgery covers
Tree surgery is the management of living trees: crown reduction, thinning and lifting, deadwooding, sectional dismantling, felling, hedge reduction and emergency response to storm damage. Each of those is a different intervention with a different effect on the tree. The skill is in choosing the smallest one that solves the problem, then cutting to the right points so the tree seals its wounds and grows back into a stable shape.

### Who it is for
Homeowners with a tree that has outgrown its position, is blocking light, dropping limbs over a drive, or leaning towards a building. Neighbours dealing with overhanging branches. Owners of larger Surrey plots with mature specimens that need periodic management. Estate and commercial site managers who need trees near paths, car parks and buildings kept demonstrably safe.

### When it is needed
After high winds, when limbs have split or hung up. When deadwood is visible in the crown over an area people use. When a crown has grown dense enough that the tree catches wind like a sail. When branches are touching a roof, gutter or overhead line. And on a planned cycle for large, mature trees, where periodic reduction is far safer and cheaper than reacting once something fails.

### Why professional tree work matters
Tree work is the most dangerous thing done in a domestic garden. It combines chainsaws, working at height and loads that swing unpredictably once cut. Beyond the immediate risk, bad cuts cause lasting damage: topping a tree produces weak, fast regrowth from the cut points that is more likely to fail in five years than the original limb was. NPTC-qualified cutting and correct rigging protect both the property and the tree.

### What is included

- Crown reduction, thinning and lifting
- Deadwooding and safety pruning
- Sectional dismantling and felling
- Storm-damaged and dangerous tree work
- Hedge reduction and reshaping
- Site clearance and chipping
- NPTC-qualified cutting, not guesswork with a hire-shop saw
- £5m public liability in place before we climb
- All arisings cleared under our Waste Carrier's Licence

Recent work

## Tree Surgery projects in Surrey

What happens if it is left

## The cost of waiting is rarely the cost you expect

### Deadwood and split limbs fall without warning
A hung-up or partly split limb is held by fibres that keep tearing. It will come down: the only question is whether anything is underneath. Over a driveway, path, conservatory or boundary, that is a property claim and a safety incident rather than an inconvenience.

### Neglected crowns catch the wind
A dense, unthinned crown behaves like a sail in a gale, loading the trunk and root plate far harder than an open crown does. Trees that fail in Surrey storms are very often trees that had not been reduced or thinned in a decade.

### Bad pruning shortens a tree's life
Cuts made in the wrong place, or a crown topped back to stubs, prevent the tree sealing properly. Decay enters at the cut, regrowth is weakly attached, and a tree that could have stood for another forty years becomes a removal job instead.

### Common mistakes we are called in to correct

- Hiring on price alone, without checking the operator is NPTC qualified and carries public liability insurance
- Asking for a tree to be "topped" instead of properly reduced, which produces weak regrowth and long-term decay
- Ignoring a Tree Preservation Order or conservation area status and only finding out after the cut
- Attempting a leaning or split tree from a ladder rather than rigging it down in sections
- Removing an entire healthy tree when a reduction and deadwood would have solved the actual problem

How the work runs

## Our process
Step 1

### Inspection
We look at the tree, its species, its condition, the target area beneath it and the access available, and check whether the site is likely to carry a TPO or conservation area restriction.

Step 2

### Diagnosis and recommendation
You get a clear explanation of what the tree needs and why, reduction, thinning, deadwooding or removal, along with a free written quote.

Step 3

### Site setup
Drop zones established, ground protection and cordons put in place, and rigging set before any saw is started.

Step 4

### Climbing and cutting
Ben leads the climbing work. Limbs are cut to correct pruning points and lowered under control rather than dropped where the ground is sensitive.

Step 5

### Clearance and chipping
Brash chipped, timber cut down and all arisings removed under our Waste Carrier's Licence. Logs can be left for you if you want them.

Step 6

### Final check and handover
The finished shape is reviewed with you, the site is swept clean, and we cover what the tree will do next season and when it should next be looked at.

Why it is worth doing properly

## What you get from this job

### NPTC-qualified cutting
Work carried out to recognised industry standard, not by someone with a hire-shop saw and a ladder.

### £5,000,000 public liability
Cover is in place before we climb, which matters when the drop zone includes your roof or a neighbour's boundary.

### Trees kept, not just cut
Reduction and thinning are specified to leave a stable, healthy shape that regrows well, rather than a stubbed crown.

### Controlled rigging over sensitive ground
Sections are lowered on ropes where there is paving, planting or glass beneath, instead of being felled freehand.

### Everything cleared the same visit
Brash chipped and arisings removed under our Waste Carrier's Licence, so there is no pile left in the garden.

### Available seven days
We answer between 7:30am and 7:30pm every day of the week, including after weekend storms.

### Types of tree work we carry out
Different problems call for different interventions, and the wrong one costs the tree.

- Crown reduction: overall size reduced back to suitable growth points, keeping natural shape
- Crown thinning: density reduced to let light and wind through without changing outline
- Crown lifting: lower limbs removed for clearance over paths, drives and lawns
- Deadwooding: dead and hanging limbs removed from the crown for safety
- Sectional dismantling: trees taken down in controlled pieces where there is no room to fell
- Felling: straight removal where there is a safe drop zone
- Hedge reduction and reshaping, including large conifer and laurel work
- Storm response: split, hung-up and wind-thrown trees made safe

### Methods, rigging and access
Access decides method. Where a machine can reach and there is a clear drop, felling is quickest. In most Surrey gardens there is no drop zone, so the tree is climbed and dismantled in sections, with heavier limbs rigged and lowered on ropes to protect what sits beneath. Cuts are made at natural growth points and outside the branch collar so the tree can compartmentalise the wound. Brash is chipped on site and timber is cut into manageable lengths for removal or, if you want them, left as logs.

### Species and seasons
Timing matters. Most broadleaf work can be done through the year, but some species are better pruned outside spring sap rise, and hedge and tree work is planned around nesting birds, which are protected by law during the nesting season. Common Surrey work includes oak, beech, ash, sycamore, birch, willow, conifer hedging and mature laurel. Ash across the county is affected by dieback, which changes how a tree behaves when cut and often argues for earlier rather than later intervention.

### Protected trees and conservation areas
Many Surrey trees are covered by a Tree Preservation Order, and trees in conservation areas need notice given to the council before work. That consent sits with the property owner, but we will tell you at the quote stage when we think a check is needed rather than letting you find out afterwards.

### Residential and commercial tree work
Domestic work is usually access-constrained and neighbour-sensitive: rigging plans, garden protection and clean-up matter as much as the cut itself. Commercial and estate work brings pedestrian and vehicle management, phased visits and trees inspected on a cycle so problems are found before they drop. We handle both from our Weybridge base.

Straight answers

## Tree Surgery questions we get asked
Anything not covered here, ask on the phone: 07817 791046, 7:30am – 7:30pm, seven days a week.

How much does tree surgery cost?It varies with the size of the tree, the access, and whether the work can be felled or has to be climbed and rigged in sections. A crown lift on a garden tree and the dismantling of a large oak over a conservatory are very different jobs, so we quote free after seeing the tree.

How long does a tree job take? Most domestic reductions, deadwooding and hedge reductions are completed in a day. Large dismantles with restricted access, or several trees on one site, can run over two or more days. The quote states what we expect.

Do I need permission to have my tree cut?You do if it is covered by a Tree Preservation Order or stands in a conservation area. Consent is the property owner's responsibility, but we will flag it at the quote stage when a check looks necessary.

Are you qualified and insured for tree work?Yes. The team is NPTC qualified and we carry £5,000,000 public liability insurance. Ben has worked in tree surgery since the age of 21 and still leads the climbing.

Will you clear away all the branches and timber?Yes. Brash is chipped and all arisings are removed under our Waste Carrier's Licence. If you would like the timber kept as firewood, say so and we will cut and stack it instead.

Can you deal with a tree damaged in a storm?Yes. Split, hung-up and wind-thrown trees are made safe as a priority job. We answer the phone from 7:30am to 7:30pm, seven days a week.

Will reducing a tree kill it?Not when it is done correctly. A proportionate reduction back to suitable growth points leaves a tree able to recover. Topping to stubs is what damages trees, and it is not something we do.

Can you remove the stump as well?Yes: stump grinding is a separate part of the job and can be quoted alongside the felling so the ground is left ready to turf, pave or plant.

Do you work on trees close to buildings and power lines?Trees over buildings, conservatories and boundaries are dismantled in rigged sections. Work in the immediate vicinity of overhead electricity supply is assessed on site, as it may need the network operator involved.

How quickly can you look at a tree I am worried about?Call 07817 791046 and describe what you are seeing. We are Weybridge based, so visits across Surrey are usually straightforward to arrange, and the quote costs nothing.
