Overview

## Stump Grinding explained
A stump left in the ground blocks everything you wanted to do next. We grind it out below finished level, remove the grindings and leave a workable surface ready for lawn, paving or planting.

### What stump grinding is
Stump grinding uses a cutting wheel to reduce a stump and its major surface roots into chippings, working below the finished ground level rather than cutting flush at the top. It replaces the alternative: excavating the root plate with a machine, which means a large hole, significant spoil, and damage to everything around the stump.

### Who it is for
Anyone whose next garden job is blocked by a stump: laying turf, building a patio, installing artificial grass, running a fence line, or simply reclaiming a corner of lawn. It also suits owners who have had a tree removed by someone else and been left with the stump, and site managers who need trip hazards removed from grounds and car parks.

### When it is needed
Immediately after felling, when the machine is already coming to site and the ground is already disturbed, is the cheapest and least disruptive time. Otherwise: when the stump has started to send up suckers, when it sits in the middle of a lawn you want to mow cleanly, or when it stands where a new surface is due to be laid.

### Why grinding beats digging or chemicals
Chemical stump killers are slow, often need several applications, and still leave the timber in the ground to rot and subside. Digging out a root plate needs machine access, creates a hole that has to be backfilled and compacted, and tears up surrounding lawn and beds. Grinding removes the stump where it stands, keeps the disturbance to the stump's own footprint, and leaves ground you can build on.

### What is included

- Access assessment and service checks
- Grinding below finished ground level
- Root flare and surface root grinding
- Removal or backfilling of grindings
- Topsoil reinstatement on request
- Removes the trip hazard and the regrowth in one visit
- No heavy digging, no wrecked lawn around the stump
- Ground low enough to turf or pave over afterwards

What happens if it is left

## The cost of waiting is rarely the cost you expect

### Stumps regrow and keep coming back
Many species send suckers up from a live stump and its root system for years. Each round of suckers has to be cut back, and on species like poplar, cherry and willow they can appear metres away across a lawn.

### Rotting timber attracts pests and subsides
A stump left to decay draws honey fungus and wood-boring insects towards nearby planting, and as the root plate breaks down the ground above it sinks, which is a serious problem if you have already laid turf or paving over the top of it.

### It stays a trip hazard and a mower breaker
A stump cut flush disappears under grass within a season. It then catches mower blades, strimmer heads and feet: a genuine liability on a commercial site and an expensive nuisance on a domestic lawn.

### Common mistakes we are called in to correct

- Cutting the stump flush with the lawn and hoping it will simply rot away in a few years
- Laying turf, artificial grass or paving straight over a stump, then dealing with subsidence later
- Grinding only the visible stump and leaving the surface roots radiating out from it
- Failing to trace buried services before grinding beside a drive, path or boundary
- Assuming the grindings are topsoil and planting straight into them without importing soil

How the work runs

## Our process
Step 1

### Inspection and access check
We measure the stump, check the species and root spread, and confirm the machine can reach it: gate widths and side-access routes decide which grinder is used.

Step 2

### Service and hazard checks
The area is checked for buried services, irrigation lines, cables and hidden hardcore before any cutting begins, and stone or metal near the stump is cleared.

Step 3

### Guarding and protection
Screens and guards are set to contain flying chips, and nearby paving, glazing, fencing and planting are protected.

Step 4

### Grinding below finished level
The stump and surface root flare are ground out below finished ground level: deeper where turf, paving or artificial grass is going over the top.

Step 5

### Grindings removed or backfilled
Grindings are either taken away under our Waste Carrier's Licence, or backfilled and consolidated into the void where you are happy for them to stay.

Step 6

### Reinstatement
Where you are turfing or planting, we can top the area with imported topsoil so the ground is ready to work rather than full of woodchip.

Why it is worth doing properly

## What you get from this job

### One visit, problem gone
Most domestic stumps are ground out and cleared in a single visit, with no return trips or repeat chemical treatments.

### Ground you can build on
Grinding below finished level and importing topsoil means you can turf, pave, lay artificial grass or plant straight afterwards.

### Minimal disruption to the garden
Disturbance is contained to the stump's footprint instead of the wide excavation a dig-out demands.

### Regrowth and suckering stopped
Removing the stump and root flare takes away the structure the tree uses to push new growth.

### Hazards removed
No hidden hard object left in the lawn to catch a mower blade, a strimmer or somebody's foot.

### Waste taken away legally
Grindings and arisings leave site under our Waste Carrier's Licence when you do not want them left.

### Grinding depth and what it allows
How deep we grind is set by what happens next.

- Turf or seed: ground low enough to take a full topsoil layer above the void
- Artificial grass: deeper, because a compacted sub-base has to be built over the area
- Paving and patios: deeper still, and the void consolidated so the sub-base does not settle
- Replanting a new tree nearby: grindings removed rather than backfilled, and clean soil imported
- Simple tidy-up: ground below the surface and the void backfilled with its own grindings

### Access, machines and site constraints
Stump grinders come in different widths, and the limiting factor is almost always the narrowest point on the route in. A standard side gate takes a compact machine; a stump behind a locked rear boundary or up a flight of steps may need a smaller grinder and more hand work, which affects the time on site. We check that route at the quote visit so nothing is discovered on the morning of the job. Grinding beside driveways, walls and boundaries also needs care over buried services and hidden concrete, both of which damage cutting teeth.

### What to do with the grindings
Grindings are woodchip, not soil. They are low in nitrogen and will draw it out of the ground as they break down, so planting directly into them rarely works. They do make a perfectly good mulch for paths and shrub borders, so some clients keep them. Where you want lawn or planting, the sensible answer is to take the grindings away and top the void with imported screened topsoil, which we can supply and place at the same visit.

### Residential and commercial grinding
In gardens the priorities are access, protection and leaving a surface you can immediately work with. On commercial grounds, schools, car parks and estates, stumps are usually a trip-hazard and liability question: the work is often scheduled outside occupied hours, with cordons in place and the area reinstated flush and safe before it reopens.

### Grinding alongside tree removal
If we are already felling the tree, grinding the stump in the same visit is by far the cheapest way to buy it. The machinery is on site, the access route is already protected, and the ground is already disturbed. Ask for both to be quoted together and you avoid paying twice for the same set-up.

Straight answers

## Stump Grinding questions we get asked
Anything not covered here, ask on the phone: 07817 791046, 7:30am – 7:30pm, seven days a week.

How much does stump grinding cost?It comes down to the stump's diameter, the species, how deep it needs to go for what you are laying over it, and the access route to reach it. We quote free after seeing it, and grinding alongside a felling we are already carrying out is cheaper than a standalone visit.

How long does grinding a stump take? Most single domestic stumps are done within a few hours, including protection, grinding and clearing up. Large multi-stemmed stumps and groups of stumps take longer, and the quote will say.

How deep do you grind?Below finished ground level as standard, and deeper when turf, artificial grass or paving is going over the top. Tell us what the ground is for and we set the depth accordingly.

Can I lay turf or a patio straight afterwards?Yes, provided the depth was set for it and the void is properly filled. For lawns we recommend removing the grindings and topping with imported topsoil rather than seeding into woodchip.

Do you remove the grindings? We can either take them away under our Waste Carrier's Licence or backfill the void with them, whichever you prefer. Some clients keep them as path or border mulch.

Will the roots regrow after grinding?Removing the stump and root flare takes away what the tree uses to push new growth. Vigorous suckering species can occasionally send up shoots from remaining lateral roots, and those are easily dealt with as they appear.

Can you reach a stump in a rear garden?Usually yes: machine width is matched to the narrowest point of the access route. We check that at the quote visit so there are no surprises on the day.

Is it messy?Grinding produces chippings, which is why we guard and screen the area first. Everything is cleared before we leave and the surrounding paving and planting is protected while we work.

Can you grind stumps near a driveway or wall?Yes, with care over buried services, foundations and hidden hardcore. These are all checked before the machine starts, and we carry £5,000,000 public liability insurance.

Do you cover my area?We grind stumps across Weybridge, Esher, Cobham, Leatherhead, Guildford, Dorking, Kingston, Richmond, Wimbledon and the surrounding Surrey area from our Weybridge base.
