Overview

## Garden Landscaping explained
A garden that finally works the way you live in it. We design and build complete outdoor spaces across Surrey, from re-levelling a tired plot to laying patios, paths, borders and lawns that still look right in ten years' time.

### What garden landscaping covers
Landscaping is the structural work that decides what a garden can do. It takes in survey and levels, ground clearance, drainage falls, sub-bases, paving, steps and retaining walls, edging, topsoil, turf, borders and planting. Some gardens need all of it. Many only need three or four of those elements corrected before the space works. We quote for the work the plot actually requires rather than a package, and we sequence it so nothing already built has to be lifted again later.

### Who it is for
Homeowners who have moved into a property with a garden that was laid out for someone else. Families who need a flat, safe lawn where there is currently a slope. Owners of larger Surrey plots who want the ground between house, drive and outbuildings to read as one designed space. Landlords and developers preparing a property for sale or letting, where a finished garden changes both the asking price and the time on market.

### When it is needed
When water sits on the lawn for days after rain. When a patio has dropped, cracked or grown a step at its edge. When the garden is on three different levels and only one of them gets used. When beds have collapsed into the lawn and the boundary has disappeared under growth. And most commonly, immediately after a move, before furniture, planting and habits settle around a layout that does not work.

### Why professional groundwork matters
Almost every landscaping failure traces back to what happens before anything visible is laid. Paving fails because the sub-base was too thin or uncompacted. Lawns fail because the topsoil layer was 40mm over builders' rubble. Retaining sleepers fail because nothing was tied back into the bank behind them. Getting the buried work right costs a little more on day one and removes the rebuild in year three, which is where most of the real money goes.

### What is included

- Garden design and layout planning
- Ground clearance, levelling and preparation
- Patios, paths and stone laying
- Turfing, seeding and soil improvement
- Planting schemes and border creation
- Sleeper beds, steps and retaining structures
- One team from first sketch to final sweep, so nothing falls between trades
- Honest sequencing and a clear order of works before we start
- Materials specified for the site, not for the quickest install

What happens if it is left

## The cost of waiting is rarely the cost you expect

### Standing water becomes structural damage
A garden that does not shed water pushes it somewhere else, usually towards the house. Saturated ground against a wall, blocked or absent falls on paving, and soil built up above damp-proof level all cause damage that costs far more to correct than the drainage falls would have cost to build in.

### Cheap sub-bases fail in the second winter
Paving laid on sand or thin hardcore looks identical to properly based paving on the day it is finished. One freeze-thaw cycle later, joints open, slabs rock and the fall reverses. At that point the surface has to come up completely: you pay for the same patio twice.

### Unresolved levels shrink the garden
A slope or an unsafe step means part of the plot is walked past rather than used. Left long enough, the unused section fills with self-seeded growth, brambles and ivy that then has to be cleared before any work can begin, adding a full stage to the job.

### Common mistakes we are called in to correct

- Buying paving before the levels and drainage have been worked out, then designing the garden around the slabs that arrived
- Splitting the job between a groundworker, a paver and a gardener, so no one owns the finished result
- Laying turf over compacted builders' soil instead of relieving the compaction and importing proper topsoil
- Building retaining structures out of sleepers with no tie-backs or drainage behind them
- Choosing a smooth, dense stone for a shaded north-facing garden and finding it slick with algae every winter

How the work runs

## Our process
Step 1

### Site visit and survey
We walk the plot with you, take levels, check access for machinery and spoil, look at how water currently moves, and listen to how you want to use the space.

Step 2

### Free written quote and order of works
You receive a free itemised quote with the sequence of work set out stage by stage, so you know what happens in what order and what it costs.

Step 3

### Clearance and groundworks
Clearance, excavation, spoil removal, levels set, falls formed and sub-bases laid and compacted. This is the stage that decides how long everything above it lasts.

Step 4

### Hard landscaping
Paving, steps, edging, retaining structures and paths built to the set levels, with joints and cuts finished properly rather than filled.

Step 5

### Soft landscaping
Topsoil, border preparation, planting and turf or seed, laid onto ground that has been prepared for it rather than raked flat.

Step 6

### Handover and clearance
Site swept, waste removed under our Waste Carrier's Licence, and a walk-round with you covering watering, first cut and how the new surfaces should be maintained.

Why it is worth doing properly

## What you get from this job

### One team, one accountability
Groundworks, paving, fencing, turf and planting are carried out by the same crew, so there is no gap between trades where responsibility disappears.

### Built to survive Surrey clay
Local soil holds water and moves. Sub-base depths, drainage falls and bed preparation are specified for that, not for a generic build-up.

### Cost held in one quote
A free written quote with the stages priced up front. You see the whole cost before the first turf is lifted.

### Safe, insured working
£5,000,000 public liability cover is in place before machinery arrives, and access routes through the property are protected.

### Waste handled legally
Spoil, arisings, old paving and green waste leave site under our Waste Carrier's Licence, so nothing is left for you to dispose of.

### Lower long-term upkeep
Correct falls, proper edging and the right planting density mean less weeding, less standing water and fewer repairs in the years after handover.

In detail

### Materials we work with
Material choice is driven by aspect, drainage and how the surface will be used, not by what is easiest to lay.

- Natural stone: sandstone, limestone and granite for patios and terraces, laid on a full mortar bed
- Porcelain paving for low-maintenance, algae-resistant terraces in shaded gardens
- Block paving and setts for drives, edging courses and transitions between levels
- Treated softwood and oak sleepers for raised beds, steps and low retaining structures
- MOT Type 1 sub-base, sharp sand and screened topsoil, depth specified per surface
- Cultivated turf, wildflower and lawn seed mixes matched to sun, shade and traffic

### Methods and build-up
A typical patio build-up is excavation to formation, geotextile where the subsoil is soft, 100-150mm of compacted MOT Type 1, a full mortar bed and slabs laid to a fall away from the building. Lawn areas are relieved of compaction, brought to level with imported screened topsoil, then turfed or seeded. Retaining work is drained behind, backfilled with free-draining material and tied back rather than simply stacked. Every level is set from a fixed datum on site so patios, steps, lawn and thresholds relate to each other correctly.

### Variations of the service
Full garden rebuilds are the largest version of this work, but most projects are narrower. Common variations include patio replacement only, re-levelling and returfing a sloping lawn, creating a single terrace and steps on a split-level plot, driveway and front-garden reworks, boundary rebuilds combining fencing with planting, and low-maintenance conversions where lawn is replaced with paving, gravel and structured planting.

### Residential and commercial sites
Private gardens are usually access-limited: everything in and out goes through a side gate or the house, so protection and barrowing plans matter more than machine size. Commercial and estate sites bring different constraints: phasing around occupancy, keeping routes open and safe during works, and specifying surfaces for constant footfall rather than family use. We work on both, and the quote reflects the access and phasing each site demands.

### Where we carry out landscaping
We are based at Segrave Close in Weybridge and landscape across Weybridge, Esher, Cobham, Leatherhead, Guildford, Dorking, Kingston, Richmond and Wimbledon, plus the surrounding villages and southwest London edges. Being local means short travel, straightforward site visits and easy follow-ups once a garden is finished.

Straight answers

## Garden Landscaping questions we get asked
Anything not covered here, ask on the phone: 07817 791046, 7:30am – 7:30pm, seven days a week.

How much does garden landscaping cost in Surrey? It depends entirely on groundworks: access, spoil removal, levels and sub-base depth move the figure far more than the choice of slab. That is why we quote free after seeing the site, rather than pricing per square metre over the phone. You get an itemised written quote with each stage costed.

How long does a full garden project take?A patio replacement is usually a matter of days. A full rebuild involving clearance, levels, paving, fencing and planting typically runs over several weeks. Your quote includes a stage-by-stage order of works so you know what is happening when.

Do you handle both design and build?Yes. Layout planning, levels and material specification are worked out with you at quote stage and then built by the same team, so there is no handover gap between a drawing and the crew on site.

Will heavy machinery damage my lawn or driveway?Access is assessed before we start and routes are protected with boards where needed. Where a machine cannot get in safely, the work is planned around barrowing instead, which is factored into the quote rather than added later.

Who removes the waste and spoil? We do. Excavated spoil, broken paving, old fencing and green waste all leave site with us under our Waste Carrier's Licence and are disposed of legally. You are not left with a skip to arrange.

Can you work on a sloping garden?Yes: split levels, terracing, steps and retaining structures are a routine part of Surrey landscaping. Slopes usually need retaining and drainage design rather than simply cutting into the bank, and that is set out in the quote.

How soon can I use a new patio or lawn?Paving needs its joints to cure before heavy use, and new turf needs a few weeks of watering and settling before its first cut and normal traffic. We cover both at handover so nothing is walked on too early.

Are you insured for work of this size?Yes: £5,000,000 public liability insurance is in place, and tree and hedge work carried out within a landscaping project is done by NPTC-qualified operators.

Do you work in Weybridge specifically?Weybridge is our home town: we are based on Segrave Close and work there most weeks of the year, alongside Esher, Cobham and the wider Surrey area.

Is the quote really free?Yes. The site visit and written quote cost nothing and carry no obligation. Call 07817 791046 between 7:30am and 7:30pm, any day of the week.
