They fail at the post, at ground line, where timber, water and soil meet. Posts set too shallow, concreted in a way that traps water against the timber, or spaced too widely for the panel type will pull out or snap in the first serious gale. What could have been two replacement posts becomes a whole line down across a garden, a car or a neighbour's property. ### Gaps mean pets, security and privacy problems A failing boundary is how dogs get out and how gardens become accessible. Gaps at the base are the usual culprit, and they widen as the ground moves and the timber cups. ### Boundary disputes get expensive Rebuilding on an assumed line, or removing a neighbour's fence rather than your own, causes disputes that outlast the fence. The line, the ownership and the access needed to build it are worth agreeing before anyone starts digging. ### Common mistakes we are called in to correct - Setting posts too shallow, or backfilling in a way that holds water against the timber at ground level - Fitting panels directly onto soil with no gravel board, so the bottom rail rots within a couple of seasons - Leaving old concrete footings in the ground and offsetting the new posts around them, which throws the whole line - Choosing 6ft close-board on an exposed, windy boundary where the loading calls for a different specification - Building over an unclear boundary line without agreeing it with the neighbour first How the work runs ## Our process Step 1 ### Site visit and measure We walk the line, measure the run, check levels and ground conditions, look at access for materials and waste, and talk through the boundary and what the fence needs to do. Step 2 ### Specification and free quote A free written quote setting out fence type, height, post and gravel board specification, gates, and removal of the existing fencing. Step 3 ### Strip out Old fencing, posts and concrete footings removed and taken away under our Waste Carrier's Licence, not buried, offset around, or left along the line. Step 4 ### Setting the posts Line and levels pulled, post holes dug to depth, posts set plumb and correctly spaced for the fence type and the exposure of that boundary. Step 5 ### Fixing the run Gravel boards, rails, panels or feather-edge boards, capping and gates fitted to a straight, level line with a consistent gap at the base. Step 6 ### Clear down and check Spoil and offcuts removed, gates hung and adjusted, and the finished run walked with you end to end. Get a free quote ### Fencing types we install The right fence is a function of privacy, exposure, ground and how the boundary reads. - Close-board / feather-edge: strongest privacy fencing, built rail by rail on site, best for exposed boundaries - Panel fencing: lap, waney-edge and framed panels for cost-effective enclosure - Trellis and trellis-topped panels: height and screening without a solid wind-loaded face - Post and rail / estate fencing: long runs, paddocks and open boundaries where a view is kept - Gates: side gates, double gates and gate posts sized for the leaf weight - Gravel boards: concrete or timber, keeping the fence clear of soil and water ### Posts, footings and ground conditions Post depth is driven by fence height and exposure: a taller fence on an open boundary needs more in the ground than a low run in a sheltered garden. Surrey ground varies from clay that holds water to sandy soil that gives less resistance, and both change how a footing performs. Where an old fence is being replaced, existing concrete has to come out; leaving it in place forces new posts off the line and compromises the run. Timber posts and concrete posts both work, and the choice is usually about appearance, budget and how easily panels should be replaceable in future. ### Boundaries, heights and permissions Two things are worth checking before work starts. First, which side of the boundary the fence sits on and who owns it: deeds and plans usually resolve it, and a conversation with the neighbour resolves the rest. Second, height: there are general planning limits on fence heights, particularly adjacent to a highway, and listed properties and conservation areas can carry additional restrictions. Consent is the property owner's responsibility, but we will raise it at quote stage when it looks relevant rather than after installation. ### Repairs versus full replacement Not every boundary needs replacing. Where posts are sound and only panels have blown out, replacing panels is straightforward and much cheaper. Where the posts have gone at ground line, panel replacement is money spent on a fence that will still fail. We will tell you which of the two we are looking at, and where a run is part sound and part failed, quote the failed section rather than the whole boundary. ### Fencing within a landscaping project Boundaries are frequently rebuilt as part of a wider garden project, and sequencing matters. Fencing usually goes in before final surfaces and planting, so access is unobstructed and spoil from post holes does not land on new paving or turf.
