Overview ## Artificial Grass explained Artificial grass is only as good as what sits underneath it. We excavate, base and compact correctly so the lawn drains, stays flat and does not ripple in its second summer. ### What artificial grass installation involves Almost all of the work is beneath the grass. A proper installation means excavating the existing lawn and topsoil, removing the spoil, laying and compacting a stone sub-base to a fall, adding a laying course, fixing perimeter edging, then laying, joining, tensioning and infilling the grass. The visible part, rolling out the turf, is the last and quickest stage. ### Who it is for Families whose lawn turns to mud from November to April. Dog owners tired of paws and worn patches. And rental, holiday and commercial properties where the grounds need to look presentable without a maintenance visit every week. ### When it is needed When the lawn is more moss and bare patch than grass, when shade under trees or between buildings means real turf will never thicken up, when a small garden is used too intensively for natural grass to recover, or as part of a wider garden rebuild where the lawn area is being reworked anyway. ### Why the sub-base decides everything Artificial grass laid straight onto soil or onto a thin, uncompacted base fails in predictable ways: it holds water because the ground beneath it is still clay, it settles unevenly and shows every dip, and it ripples as the ground moves under it. Laid over unexcavated clay, water sits at the interface, the surface stays wet and smells, and the whole point of removing the mud is lost. ### Ripples and dips are not fixable in place Once a badly based lawn settles unevenly or wrinkles, there is no adjustment that solves it. The grass has to be lifted, the base rebuilt and the turf relaid, which means paying for the installation twice. ### Bad joints and edges show permanently Seams that are not aligned by pile direction, or edges not fixed to a solid perimeter, become the first thing anyone notices. Edges lift, joints open at the ends, and no amount of infill hides it. ### Common mistakes we are called in to correct - Rolling grass over existing turf or soil with only a membrane between, to save on excavation - Skipping compaction, or compacting one deep layer instead of building the base up in layers - Laying two rolls with the pile running in different directions, which makes the joint obvious in daylight - Fixing to timber edging that rots, rather than a solid, secure perimeter detail - Choosing the cheapest, shiniest grass available and finding it looks plastic and flattens within a season How the work runs ## Our process Step 1 ### Site visit and measure We measure the area, check drainage and access, look at what is there now, and talk through pile height, colour and how the lawn will be used. Get a free quote ### The build-up, layer by layer A typical installation runs to a considerable depth before any grass appears. - Excavation of existing turf, topsoil and roots, and removal of spoil from site - Geotextile separation layer over the formation where the subsoil is soft - Compacted stone sub-base, built up and compacted in layers, laid to a fall - Screeded laying course to give a true, even surface for the grass to sit on - Secure perimeter edging at every boundary the grass meets - Weed membrane over the prepared base - Grass laid, joined, trimmed, fixed and infilled, with the pile brushed up ### Choosing the right grass Pile height, density, colour blend and yarn shape all change how a lawn looks and wears. Short, dense pile handles heavy footfall and pets and stays upright; longer pile looks more relaxed but flattens faster in busy areas. A blend of green tones with a brown thatch layer reads as natural, while a single bright green reads as plastic in daylight. Where dogs are the main reason for the job, drainage through the backing and how easily the surface rinses matter more than pile length. We bring the options to the quote visit so you are choosing against your actual garden and light. ### Detailing, cut-ins and awkward shapes Most gardens are not rectangles. Cut-ins around trees, beds, manholes, steps and paving edges are where an installation is judged, and each needs a secured, trimmed edge rather than a loose cut. Where the lawn meets a patio, the level is set so the grass finishes flush rather than standing proud or dropping away. Where a mature tree sits within the area, the base is kept clear of the root flare. On sloping sites the base is stepped and the grass tensioned to prevent creep down the fall. ### Maintenance and lifespan Artificial grass is low maintenance, not no maintenance. Brushing the pile up periodically keeps it standing, leaves want clearing before they break down and feed moss on the surface, and pet areas benefit from an occasional rinse. Done that way, a properly based lawn holds its appearance for many years. Where a lawn does fail early, it is almost always the base rather than the grass, which is precisely why the excavation and compaction stages are not the place to save money. ### Residential and commercial installations Domestic lawns are usually about mud, dogs, children and shade, and access dictates how spoil comes out and stone goes in. Commercial and rental installations are driven by appearance with no maintenance visits, and by traffic, which pushes the specification towards shorter, denser pile and a heavier base. How much does artificial grass cost to install?The grass itself is a minority of the cost: excavation, spoil removal and the sub-base drive the price, along with access and how complex the shape is. We quote free after measuring the area. How long does installation take?A typical domestic lawn takes a few days from excavation to finish. Difficult access, large areas or complex cut-ins add time, and the quote sets out what to expect. Does artificial grass drain?Yes: the backing is permeable and the base is laid to a fall so water gets away. That only works if the ground was excavated and properly based, which is why we do not lay over existing turf. Is it suitable for dogs?Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons people ask for it. We would specify a shorter, denser pile with good drainage through the backing, and the surface can be rinsed down. Will it look fake?That is down to specification and installation. A multi-tone grass with a thatch layer, laid with all pile running the same way and edges properly cut in, looks convincing. A single bright green rolled out over lumpy ground does not. Does it get hot in summer?Artificial grass warms up in strong direct sun more than real grass does. In shaded or partly shaded gardens it is barely noticeable; in a full-sun garden it is worth knowing before you commit. How long does it last?A properly based, well-specified lawn holds up for many years. Early failure is nearly always base failure, settlement, poor drainage or rippling, rather than the grass wearing out. What maintenance does it need?Brushing the pile up now and then, clearing leaves before they break down on the surface, and rinsing pet areas occasionally. No mowing, feeding or watering. Can you lay it around trees and flower beds?Yes. Cut-ins around trees, beds, manholes and paving are detailed with secured edges, and the base is kept clear of tree root flares.
